Celebrating 50 years of the Táncház (Dance House) movement in Hungary.
Vardos have spent decades perfecting their Eastern European instrumental and language skills; embodying a culture that is ever-present in their performances. Driven by violinist Alana, chased by Kirri on double bass and Sofia on accordion, Vardos play folk and Romany music learnt from Roma musicians.
Their performance in Primrose Potter Salon celebrates 50 years of the Táncház (Dance House) movement in Hungary, presenting longer form dance suites with Hungarian dancers Hien Albert and Karoly Albert.
Taking inspiration from Béla Bartók’s collected works on wax cylinders, Hungarian dancers and musicians wanting to preserve, share and revive Hungarian music from remote and isolated areas travelled widely to villages with Hungarian populations to learn from old masters, record and collect songs and dances. This culminated in a revival of Transylvanian string band music, exploring in intricate detail the variety of bowing, ornamentation and rhythm between villages.
