Jazz Westside returns to Maribyrnong as the Melbourne International Jazz Festival take over Footscray’s hidden civic square for an afternoon of incredibly diverse, hip-swinging rhythms and beats flowing out of Africa.
Program
2:30pm – NIASHA
Handpicked by Sampa the Great to accompany her on a recent European tour, NIASHA possesses an impressive ability to shift between genres, plumbing the depths of soul, R’n’B, hip-hop and Amapiano.
3:45pm – Yusupha Ngum and The Affia Band
Melbourne-based Gambian singer-songwriter Yusupha Ngum and his five-piece outfit, The Affia Band, perform Afro-fusion music, drawing from Yusupha’s own rich past of Afro-fusion jazz, folk music, and the West African “mbalax” tradition—a percussive style of dance music distinct to West Africa.
5pm – Sylent Nqo and The Experience
Having long been hailed as one of Zimbabwe’s greatest unsung musical luminaries, multi-award-winning multi-instrumentalist, composer, singer and bandleader, Sylent Nqo, has shared the stage and worked with legends such as the late Hugh Masekela and UB40. For his Australian debut, Nqo will be joined by local Afro-jazz favourites The Experience.
