The Boîte presents the World Premiere of Blue on Blue for the 2023 Matsudo Week Sister City celebrations in the City of Whitehorse. Saturday 13th May 2023 Box Hill Community Arts Centre.Blue on Blue celebrates our place within the natural world.
Composer and shakuhachi player, Anne Norman’s response to a commission from the Peter and Susan Yates Foundation is a joyous immersion in country, a walk through woodlands, along windswept beaches and a plunge into the ocean’s powerful swell. It conveys stories of our coastline: the passion of a teenage surfer; the tales of a retired fisherman; and the tragedy of shipwreck.
Anne Norman’s piece has now given its name to the collective of vocalists and instrumentalists performing the music. Blue on Blue incorporates Japanese instruments within a brand-new suite of Australian music, contemplative, entertaining, surprising and hauntingly beautiful.
The Peter and Susan Yates Foundation commissioned music incorporating shakuhachi to celebrate Victoria’s coast from Point Lonsdale to Apollo Bay. The project is auspiced by The Boite and also supported by the Salzer and the Trawalla Foundations to compose, rehearse and record the music. The creation of the music was also made possible by the hospitality of locals along the coast; by groups who maintain wetlands and coastal woodlands; and inland farmers
and conservationists who protect brolgas.
