3ZZZ goes into all the news and upcoming games for the Men’s and Women’s 2023 NPL Victoria season.

This is NPL on 3ZZZ, where we bring you all the results of the NPL Victoria Men’s and Women’s competition. Brought to you by Bowens Timber and Hardware, Albert Street Café and Winsher Sports. My name is Rebecca Maakasa.
On Friday night, Bentleigh Greens lost at home to Dandenong Thunder 3-0. On Saturday, Avondale thrashed newcomers Moreland City 7-0. Hume City defeated North Geelong on the road 4-0. Melbourne Knights had a thrilling 3-2 win away against Port Melbourne. Green Gully also won away, this time to Altona Magic 2-1. And on Sunday, St. Albans and Oakleigh drew 1-1.
3ZZZ was present to broadcast the big derby match between South Melbourne and Heidelberg United on Friday night at Lakeside Stadium. Heidelberg took the lead at the 7th minute mark with a goal by Kaine Sheppard. Later in the match at the 79th minute Heidelberg super-sub Sean Ellis scored to make it 2-0.
The South Melbourne players tried valiantly to catch up but to no avail. Heidelberg held on for a famous victory against their old foes.
The ladder has Avondale jumping to first, followed by South Melbourne, Oakleigh Cannons, Green Gully, Melbourne Knights and Dandenong Thunder to finish the top 6. St. Albans, Hume City, Port Melbourne, Altona Magic, Moreland City, Heidelberg United, North Geelong and Bentleigh Greens make up the rest.
For round 6, on Friday night Melbourne Knights face Altona Magic and Heidelberg United take on Bentleigh Greens. On Saturday, Avondale hosts Green Gully. North Geelong plays away to Moreland City. Dandenong Thunder will visit Port Melbourne. Oakleigh Cannons plays Hume City and to finish off the round, St. Albans hosts South Melbourne.
Now to the NPLW, and on Friday night, Box Hill and Calder United started the new season with a thrilling 3 all draw. On Saturday Alamein and Preston drew 1 all. Bayside United defeated Southern United 3-0 and on Sunday Bulleen defeated Boroondara 2-1.
On Saturday evening, 3ZZZ was at Lakeside Stadium once more for the women’s derby between South Melbourne and Heidelberg. In the first half Heidelberg took the lead with a penalty by Stephanie Galea. But in the second half, Kiwi import Tayla Christensen scored for South Melbourne in the 49th minute. Both sides had their chances but it ended in a 1 all draw.
For the NPLW ladder Bayside are on top, followed by Bulleen, Box Hill, Calder, Alamein and Heidelberg United. Then we have Preston, South Melbourne, Senior NTC, Boroondara and Southern United.
For the upcoming NPLW games for Round 2. On Friday it’s Box Hill versus Southern United. Then it’s Senior NTC against South Melbourne. On Saturday Calder United hosts Alamein. Heidelberg United faces Bulleen. And to finish, Boroondara plays Bayside United.
