The Boîte presents The Tsiftes Band | Rebetiko Band in Concert at Mark St Hall

The Boîte presents The Tsiftes Band | Rebetiko Band in Concert at Mark St Hall

Following a stimulating visit to Greece, and opportunities to jam with lots of musicians there, Con Kalamaris is back in
Melbourne, full of ideas, tunes and inspiration. He is bringing an evening of Greek strings to The Boite World Music Cafe
space in North Fitzroy in mid-March.

Tsiftes ensemble plays as a duo, trio, quartet, or quintet! Con Kalamaras and Alex Petropoulos are immersed in Greek
tunes, playing their beloved Rebetika on bouzouki and guitar. A Melbourne-based musician, events producer, and
composer, Con was captured by Rebetika as a young musician, and he has made it a significant part of his life since he was
first entrapped! His passion for Greek music has inspired him to produce music events and festivals, tour around Australia,
Europe, UK, and Japan, compose music for film and perform in various ensembles in Melbourne. He loves to work with like minded people who share his passion for world music.

Rebetiko music, known as the Greek blues, emerged in Greece in the 1920s as the music of the poor and the outlawed.
Early songs were written in prisons where inmates crouched in circles, singing and playing their crudely fashioned baglamas.
Central to Rebetiko are the subjects of pain, heartbreak and camaraderie, themes relevant to the subculture of the time.
Eager to preserve this small piece of cultural history, the members of Tsiftes are renowned for their authentic renditions and
vocal harmonies. Their performances ensure the spirit of Greek blues transcends time and continues to resonate with
contemporary audiences.

Pharaoh

Pharaoh

Pharaoh is a landmark exhibition that celebrates three thousand years of ancient Egyptian art and culture. Through more than 500 works, including monumental sculpture, architecture, temple statuary, exquisite jewellery, papyri, coffins and a rich array of funerary objects, the exhibition unpacks the phenomenon of pharaoh, those all-powerful kings claiming a divine origin.

The exhibition comprises seven thematic sections that explore the pharaoh’s roles and duties, including as the high priest officiating in temples, the head of the country’s administration, the leader of the army and the head of the royal family.

From imagery on rings, bracelets and personal treasures, to statues and monuments of colossal scale, the pharaohs presented an idealised image of themselves as invincible warriors and fervent worshippers of the gods, who held a unique position as intermediaries between these divine beings and the rest of humanity.
